Many skeptics have come to believe that the slave narrative Equiano contains false statements, such as where he was born and his real name, yet regardless of these minor accusations, this young mans story needs to be heard. Equiano was an African American male that was stripped from his family as a boy and forced into slavery. The only thing that seemed to comfort him during times of oppression was his views on providential circumstance. From the moment his foreseer allowed him to become baptized, Equiano gained a new sense of hope. He came to realize that God was in control of his life throughout his entire journey of becoming a slave, and that God was keeping him safe. No matter how bad his circumstances might be, he had a better life than the majority of slaves. Equiano became an educated man and constantly wondered why slave owners treated there slaves so harshly. It is common sense that the better condition you keep something in, the more efficiently it will work, and this concept can also be applied to slaves. I don't understand why a person would pay a large sum of money for a slave and then deprive it of necessities essential to live, such as food or shelter. It is almost equivalent to just throwing the money away, because under inhumane living conditions the slaves would die therefore being no use at all to their "master." Fortunately for Equiano's sake, God protected him and he eventually earned enough money to purchase his freedom. It is sad to say that Equiano's story is not the only one of its kind, and slavery still continues to this day.
