When first reading Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions, I did not fully understand what he was talking about. Luckily when I went to class the next day our professor explained to us that he was admitting to the fact that he enjoyed pain, such as being spanked and punished. This concept is hard for me to grasp because I run from anything that merely looks painful, but I have heard from many people that the reason they have so many tattoos is because they enjoy the pain it creates. He views pain as love which is kind of ironic because love is supposed to protect you from pain ,I mean you wouldn't give your heart to someone that is going to hurt you. However, I can relate to his double life analogy. In the story, Rousseau tells about his two different relationships with two totally opposite women. In one romance he receives pain and in the other he receives passion. Dr. Vince described the analogy of super heroes. They are one type of person in the day and then transform completely into someone else by night. Many people strive to be something they are not in order to stray from their ordinary routine. It can also be said that people with anger issues become a completely different person when they are angry, such as the incredible hulk example. A double life can at times create an unimaginable thrill, but at the end of the day one must choose a side. As for me, I can hardly keep up with my ONE life due to my busy schedule, and therefore see no need to have two :)
